Indian weightlifting star Mirabai Chanu once again made the nation proud by clinching the gold medal in the women’s 48kg category at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Lifting a total of 190kg, she secured India’s first gold medal of the Games and created history by winning her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold after her triumphs in Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022.
The 31-year-old produced a remarkable performance despite a shaky start. She failed to lift 82kg in her opening snatch attempt but bounced back strongly to successfully lift 85kg in her third attempt, setting a new Commonwealth Games record in the process. Her resilience once again highlighted why she remains one of India’s finest weightlifters.
In the clean and jerk event, Mirabai missed her first attempt but successfully lifted 105kg in her second attempt to seal the gold medal. With the title already secured, she chose not to take her third lift. Nigeria’s Ruth Asukwo Nyang claimed the silver medal, while Malaysia’s Irene Jane Henry settled for bronze.
