The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has taken significant action against the widespread issue of spam and fraud in the telecom sector over the past year. Based on complaints filed by citizens, TRAI has successfully disconnected more than 21 lakh mobile numbers and blacklisted approximately one lakh entities suspected of misuse. The Ministry of Communications emphasized that this large-scale enforcement was made possible only by the active participation of lakhs of citizens reporting suspicious communication.
TRAI urged the public to continue reporting spam and fraudulent calls through the official TRAI DND App to stop the misuse of telecom services at the source. The Authority clarified that simply blocking an unwanted number on an individual device only hides it and does not prevent the scammer from targeting others. When citizens report through the DND App, telecom service providers are able to trace the source and permanently disconnect the fraudulent numbers.
To stay safe, TRAI advised users to never share personal or banking details over calls, messages, or social media and to immediately disconnect suspicious communication. Cases of cyber fraud should be reported to the National Cybercrime Helpline (1930) or the cybercrime.gov.in portal. Additionally, users can report telecom-related fraud attempts through Sanchar Saathi’s “Chakshu” feature, highlighting that continued reporting is key to building a safe and trustworthy telecom ecosystem.
