Opposition Under Fire for Blocking Women’s Reservation Bill: Union Minister Srinivasa Varma Lashes Out

Union Minister of State Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma has strongly criticized the opposition parties following the failure of the 131st Constitutional Amendment Bill in Parliament. The NDA government aims to implement women’s reservations starting from the 2029 general elections. To facilitate this, the government proposed increasing the number of Lok Sabha seats to 850. However, the bill failed to secure the necessary two-thirds majority, falling short by just 84 votes due to opposition from the Congress and its allies.

The Minister slammed the opposition for spreading “false propaganda” regarding the delimitation process. He stated that the opposition’s claim—that the reorganization of constituencies would unfairly disadvantage Southern states—is baseless. He reminded that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had personally assured that increasing the total number of Lok Sabha seats would enhance representation for all states rather than causing a loss to any specific region. Despite these assurances, the opposition chose to block the bill.

Srinivasa Varma further accused certain political parties of practicing dynastic politics, alleging that they only provide positions to their own family members while obstructing opportunities for ordinary women. In contrast, he highlighted that the BJP has been maintaining a 33% reservation for women within its party structure for the past 25 years. He concluded with confidence that under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, the government remains committed to ensuring the implementation of women’s reservations by the 2029 elections.
