YSRCP Faces Backlash Over Inaction Against Leaders Implicated in Serious Crimes

The Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) is currently grappling with a severe political and reputational crisis following its loss of power, as several key leaders find themselves embroiled in serious criminal charges, including murder and kidnapping. The involvement of prominent figures, ranging from former Kadapa Deputy Mayor Nithyananda Reddy to MLC Ananthababu, has significantly damaged the party’s public image. The high command’s apparent reluctance to take strict disciplinary action against these tainted politicians is raising serious questions about the party’s credibility and its commitment to upholding the law.

The crisis has been exacerbated by shocking developments in two specific cases. In Kadapa, police identified Nithyananda Reddy as the mastermind behind the murder of a YSRCP worker and real estate businessman, Pedda Dastagiri. Subsequent raids on Reddy’s residence uncovered property documents worth over Rs 100 crore, hinting at deep-seated financial motives and internal factionalism. Meanwhile, MLC Ananthababu, who is a primary accused in the murder of his former driver Subrahmanyam, is now facing fresh charges for allegedly threatening and bribing witnesses. Despite his own confession to the crime, the lack of decisive action from the YSRCP leadership has fueled public suspicion that these leaders are operating with political backing.

The ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is actively capitalizing on the YSRCP’s strategic silence, branding them a “party of criminals” and using these incidents as evidence of poor law and order during their previous five-year tenure. While YSRCP chief Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy had previously championed a zero-tolerance policy toward wrongdoers, his current inaction is being viewed as a risky attempt to prevent the weakening of the party cadre. However, political analysts note that while the public might tolerate some level of corruption, a culture of lethal violence is widely unacceptable. To regain public trust and function as a responsible opposition, the YSRCP is facing immense pressure to crack down heavily on the criminal elements within its ranks.
