A wave of concern swept through the cricketing world during the IPL 2026 match between Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings on Saturday, as DC pacer Lungi Ngidi suffered a severe head injury. The incident occurred in the third over of the Punjab innings when Ngidi attempted to take a high catch off Priyansh Arya’s bat. After misjudging the ball’s trajectory, the South African fast bowler fell heavily, striking the back of his head with significant force against the hard turf of the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
The gravity of the situation was immediately apparent as Ngidi remained motionless on the ground, prompting a 15-minute halt in play. Medical personnel rushed to the middle, and visibly distressed teammates looked on as a neck brace was applied to the pacer. In a rare and sobering sight for a cricket match, an ambulance was driven onto the field to transport Ngidi directly to Max Hospital in Karol Bagh for emergency assessment. Reports indicated that while he could make minor hand gestures, he was unable to move his neck or head, signaling a potential concussion or serious spinal impact.
Following the injury, Delhi Capitals utilized the concussion substitute rule, bringing in Indian all-rounder Vipraj Nigam to replace Ngidi for the remainder of the game. Despite the match resuming, a somber mood lingered over the stadium, with players and coaches from both sides, including Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting, expressing their concern for the bowler’s well-being. The cricket community now awaits further medical updates, hoping for a full and speedy recovery for the star pacer after such a frightening accident.
