Amid ongoing high tensions between the United States and Iran, US President Donald Trump has made significant remarks expressing his willingness to hold a meeting with Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei. In a recent interview with a prominent newspaper, Trump signaled that if circumstances permit and conditions are favorable, he intends to meet with the Iranian leader at an appropriate time.
The background to this development stems from February, when the former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed during joint US-Israeli military strikes. Following his father’s death, Mojtaba Khamenei assumed the mantle of Supreme Leader; however, he has yet to make a public appearance, triggering widespread speculation about his health and governance capabilities. Rumors have also circulated suggesting that he was critically injured during those initial military operations.
Addressing these concerns, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified on Tuesday that Mojtaba Khamenei is indeed alive and active, managing state affairs through written directives and intermediaries. Confirming this statement, President Trump noted that Mojtaba is actively approving key administrative decisions and indicated that backend diplomatic discussions are progressing. He expressed optimism that relations between the two nations are showing signs of gradual improvement.
