Breaking Nehru’s Record: PM Narendra Modi Set to Become India’s Longest Continuously Serving Prime Minister

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on the verge of scripting a monumental milestone in Indian political history. On June 10, 2026, he will officially become the longest continuously serving Prime Minister of independent India, breaking a decades-old record held by the nation’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Having first taken the oath of office on May 26, 2014, Modi will successfully complete 4,399 consecutive days in office by June 10, surpassing Nehru’s historic tenure.

Following India’s first general elections, Jawaharlal Nehru assumed charge on May 13, 1952, and served continuously for 4,398 days until his demise on May 27, 1964. PM Modi is now set to overtake this record, having already surpassed former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s continuous streak of 4,077 days back on July 25, 2025. This feat highlights a significant shift in India’s political landscape, especially given how drastically the nation’s demographics and political ecosystem have expanded since the early post-independence era.

The scale of democratic participation has grown immensely since Nehru’s time, when India’s population stood at 34 crore with just 17 crore voters and 53 contesting parties. Under Modi’s tenure, the population has crossed 146 crore, and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections saw a massive multi-party battlefield with 744 political parties competing. Notably, Modi is the only Prime Minister after Nehru to win three consecutive Lok Sabha terms, and he already holds the grand record of being India’s longest-serving elected representative with over 8,930 days combined as the Chief Minister of Gujarat and the Prime Minister of India.
