20-Year-Old IIT Madras Student Renée Noronha Becomes the Youngest Indian Female Ironman

In a phenomenal achievement for Indian sports, 20-year-old IIT Madras student Renée Noronha has scripted history by becoming the youngest Indian woman to complete the grueling Ironman triathlon. Demonstrating exceptional grit, endurance, and dedication, she has set a benchmark for young athletes across the nation and emerged as an inspiring icon.

Renée proved her mettle at the recently concluded “Century Tuna Ironman” competition held in the Philippines. Competing in the 18–24 age category, she finished the exhausting race in 15 hours, 55 minutes, and 37 seconds, securing the top spot. With this spectacular victory, she has qualified for the prestigious Ironman World Championship to be held in Hawaii later this year. The full Ironman distance is widely considered one of the toughest one-day sporting events in the world, consisting of a 3.8 km swim, a 180 km bicycle ride, and a 42.2 km full marathon run.

Remarkably, this is not the first time Renée has shattered records. In 2023, at the tender age of 18 years and 49 days, she completed the Ironman race in New Zealand, making her the youngest Indian woman ever to cross an Ironman finish line. Initially a professional artistic gymnast, she transitioned to endurance triathlons at the age of 16. Currently based in London, she is balance-managing her time efficiently by pursuing a remote BSc degree in Data Science and Applications from IIT Madras. Renée has set her sights on a bigger target: to complete Ironman triathlons across six continents before turning 21 to secure a place in the Guinness World Records.
