Diplomatic Milestone: Japan Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to Visit India from July 1 for 16th Annual Summit

To further strengthen bilateral relations between India and Japan, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi will pay an official visit to India from July 1 to July 3, 2026. This trip comes upon a formal invitation from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as announced by the Ministry of External Affairs on Friday. This high-profile state visit marks Takaichi’s first official trip to India since assuming office as the Prime Minister of Japan.

During the three-day visit, both prime ministers will co-chair the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit in Delhi. Initially, authorities planned to host the prestigious summit in Guwahati to showcase Japan’s ongoing development and infrastructure projects across the northeastern states. However, due to scheduling constraints and logistical requirements of Prime Minister Takaichi’s itinerary, the official venue was subsequently relocated to the national capital.

Building on the foundation of the 15th summit held in Tokyo last year, the upcoming bilateral talks will focus heavily on expanding the “Special Strategic and Global Partnership” between the two nations. Key agenda items are expected to cover a wide range of critical sectors, including trade, investments, defense technology, and mutual stability in the Indo-Pacific region. Furthermore, the leaders are slated to hold deep discussions on economic security, securing critical minerals, strengthening global energy supply chains, and accelerating defense production cooperation.
