The southern region of Mindanao in the Philippines was struck by a powerful earthquake on Friday night. According to seismological reports, the tremor occurred at approximately 7:30 PM local time and registered a magnitude of 6.5 on the Richter scale. The sudden and intense shaking triggered panic among residents, particularly those living in coastal areas, forcing them to evacuate their homes and flee to open roads and higher ground for safety.
Data released by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) indicated that the epicenter of the earthquake was located about 34 kilometers away from the town of Sarangani within the Davao Region. The seismic activity originated at a depth of 42 to 52 kilometers below the Earth’s surface. The impact of the quake caused large buildings and offices across Davao City to sway noticeably, and videos documenting the frightening moments have since gone viral on social media.
While official reports regarding the exact extent of property damage or casualties are still being gathered, disaster management authorities confirmed that no immediate tsunami warnings have been issued for coastal zones. This latest crisis comes as a harsh blow to locals who are still reeling from a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit the same region on June 8, which claimed 81 lives, injured over 1,300 people, and displaced nearly 16 lakh residents. Geologically, the Philippines sits directly along the volatile Pacific ‘Ring of Fire,’ a zone notorious for continuous tectonic plate movements and high volcanic activity that make heavy earthquakes a frequent challenge for the country.
