Google has introduced a new policy under which Android device backups will now count toward the storage available in a user’s Google account. Effective from July 7 for new users, backup data such as SMS messages, call history, device settings, app data, and other system information will be included in the 15 GB of free cloud storage provided with every Google account. Existing users will receive the update gradually over the coming months.
Previously, only files such as Google Photos uploads, videos, and MMS media counted against account storage. Alongside the new policy, Google has added more detailed backup controls, allowing users to choose whether to back up SMS and MMS messages, call history, device settings, and individual app data. These options are available through the Google Backup section in Android settings.
Google said the change is expected to have only a minor impact on storage usage, estimating an average increase of about 40 MB per account. Users who need additional space can upgrade through Google One subscription plans, which in India start at ₹59 per month for 30 GB of cloud storage. The company said the updated policy is intended to improve transparency and give users greater control over the data they choose to back up.
