Nepal is facing a double disaster as devastating flash floods are being accompanied by strong tremors in the Himalayan region. According to reports citing the U.S. Geological Survey, seismic activity linked to changes beneath the Earth’s surface was recorded at a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter scale. Authorities suspect that the tremors may have contributed to landslides in the affected areas.
The situation has become particularly severe in Rasuwa district near the Tibet border. Massive floodwaters swept through several areas, carrying away homes, roads and other infrastructure. Thousands of people are feared to have been affected, while several villages have reportedly been wiped out by the force of the floods and landslides.
The crisis has also raised serious concerns over the safety of tourists in the region. More than 400 tourists are reportedly unaccounted for, including over 300 foreign nationals. Among them, around 105 are believed to be Indian citizens. Rescue and relief operations are facing major challenges amid damaged roads, landslides and continuing floodwaters.
