Sarpanches in Mancherial district staged a protest in front of the Collectorate, demanding full powers for sarpanches to ensure smooth functioning of gram panchayats and accelerate village development. The protest was organised under the leadership of the Mancherial District Sarpanches Committee, with several sarpanches from across the district participating and bringing their concerns to the government’s attention.
During the protest, the sarpanches demanded the abolition of the existing joint cheque power system involving deputy sarpanches. They called for exclusive cheque-signing powers to be granted to sarpanches, who are directly elected by the people. They argued that the current system was creating difficulties in carrying out development works and managing the day-to-day administration of gram panchayats.
The sarpanches expressed concern that the lack of full administrative and financial powers was hampering development activities in villages. They urged the government to address their demands and empower elected sarpanches to effectively implement development programmes and ensure proper functioning of gram panchayats.
