Vitamin B12 Deficiency: These Early Warning Signs You Should Not Ignore

Vitamins and minerals are essential for the body to function properly, and vitamin B12 is one of the most important nutrients. It plays a key role in red blood cell production, normal functioning of the nervous system and DNA synthesis. When B12 levels become low, symptoms may initially appear mild but can become more serious if the deficiency is left untreated.

Common warning signs of vitamin B12 deficiency include persistent fatigue, weakness, pale skin, dizziness and shortness of breath. Some people may also experience numbness or a tingling sensation in the hands and feet, balance problems, difficulty walking, blurred vision and a sore or swollen tongue. Digestive symptoms such as loss of appetite, diarrhoea and unexplained weight loss can also occur.

As the deficiency progresses, it can affect the brain and nervous system, potentially causing memory problems, difficulty concentrating, confusion, mood changes and other neurological issues. Since several of these symptoms can have causes other than B12 deficiency, they should not be used to self-diagnose the condition. A healthcare professional can recommend blood tests to check B12 levels and identify the underlying cause.
