YCP Krishna district president and former minister Perni Nani expressed concern over the irrigation situation in the Krishna Delta. During a video conference with YSRCP chief and former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, he highlighted the difficulties being faced by farmers. He said that although the Krishna Delta has an ayacut of more than six lakh acres, cultivation has not yet started on around 50,000 to 55,000 acres due to inadequate water supply.
According to Perni Nani, cultivation has reportedly not begun on nearly 90% of the agricultural land in areas including Avanigadda, Koduru, Nagayalanka, Thotlavalluru and Machilipatnam North. In Machilipatnam South, around 40% of the land is yet to be cultivated. He also said nearly 20,000 acres in Guduru, Pedana, Bantumilli and Kruthivennu areas remain without cultivation, while hundreds of acres in Gudivada Rural and Gudlavalleru are also reportedly lying vacant.
Perni Nani said the delay in cultivation could increase farmers’ input costs and affect crop yields. He expressed concern that even farmers who have already started cultivation could face losses if water is not available during critical stages of crop growth. According to him, continued water shortages could put the investments made by farmers at risk.
