Sourav Ganguly, affectionately known as the “Maharaja” of Bengal, remains the most discussed figure whenever elections approach in West Bengal. Despite being viewed by opposition parties as the only Bengali icon capable of challenging Mamata Banerjee’s charismatic leadership, Ganguly has consistently maintained a firm distance from the political arena. While rumors of his political debut surface during every election cycle, “Dada” has made it clear that he has no interest in trading his peaceful life for the high-pressure, often polarized world of Indian politics.
One of the primary reasons for his reluctance is his desire to remain a unifying figure rather than a partisan one. Ganguly enjoys a unique status in Bengal where he is loved by all, regardless of their political leanings; he maintains close ties with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee while sharing a professional rapport with top BJP leaders like Amit Shah. Joining one side would inevitably alienate a significant portion of his massive fanbase. Furthermore, following a heart attack in 2021, Ganguly has prioritized his health and family, steering clear of the grueling travel schedules and mental stress that define modern political campaigning.
Beyond personal reasons, Ganguly’s thriving professional life provides him with immense satisfaction and stability outside of government. Having served as the BCCI President, he is currently occupied with international cricket administration, commentary, and various successful business ventures. He believes that the “political baggage” and ideological labels that come with party membership could tarnish his carefully curated brand value. For now, the “Bengal Tiger” seems content playing a perfect “off-side drive,” keeping politics safely behind the boundary ropes while continuing to serve his state as a global sporting icon.
