India has taken a major step in railway innovation with the launch of its first hydrogen-powered passenger train. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the ‘Namo Green Rail’ on Friday, which will operate between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana. The train will be managed by the Delhi Division of Northern Railway, marking a significant milestone in the country’s push towards green transportation.
The train will be open to regular passengers from Sunday. Built by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, the state-of-the-art train has been assigned the numbers 74010 and 74009. It will cover the 89-kilometre stretch between Jind and Sonipat in around two hours.
With a top speed of 75 kmph, the hydrogen-powered train is designed to be an eco-friendly alternative to conventional diesel trains. Since it produces no harmful emissions during operation, it is expected to play a key role in reducing pollution and is being hailed as a major step toward the future of sustainable railway transportation.
