Sugar prices are rising steadily across the country, raising concerns among consumers ahead of the upcoming festive season. With several major festivals scheduled after Independence Day on August 15, the sharp increase in sugar prices is putting additional pressure on household budgets. Retail sugar prices have reportedly increased by around 9% compared with the same period last year.
The average retail price of sugar in the country was around Rs.47.17 per kg a month ago, but it has now increased to approximately Rs.50.30 per kg, marking a rise of about 6.6% in a month. Compared with last year, prices have climbed by nearly 9%. The increase comes at a time when demand for sugar is expected to rise during the festive season, potentially adding to the financial burden on ordinary households.
The central government has also taken measures to prevent excessive stockpiling and control rising prices. A stock limit for sugar dealers has been imposed from August 1 to November 30. The government has stated that the country has sufficient sugar stocks for domestic consumption and that necessary steps are being taken to ensure that consumers can purchase sugar at reasonable prices.
