“Just Take It Easy” — Why Simple Advice Can Sometimes Hurt More

“Take it easy… Don’t think too much… Stay positive… Everyone has problems… Just forget it!” These are often the first words people say when someone opens up about their pain. While such advice may come from a good place, many fail to understand what the person sharing their feelings is actually going through. If we pause and look deeper into their emotions, the entire situation can appear very different.

Imagine someone struggling to sleep at night because an incident from the morning keeps replaying in their mind. Unable to handle the thoughts alone, they finally call someone they trust and share what is troubling them. Instead of being heard, they immediately hear, “Just take it easy.” After ending the call, the person may return to the same thoughts, wondering why they are unable to simply forget something that is clearly affecting them.

Sometimes, people do not need solutions or motivational words. They simply need someone to listen without judging or dismissing their feelings. Saying “forget it” may seem like a small gesture, but acknowledging someone’s emotions and saying, “I understand, tell me what happened,” can make a much bigger difference. Listening with patience can often be the first step towards helping someone feel less alone.
