A major development has emerged regarding Google’s newly launched Pixel 11 series. GrapheneOS, the privacy- and security-focused Android operating system, says it may not be able to provide full official support for the Pixel 11 lineup. The GrapheneOS Foundation has reportedly identified the absence of a crucial hardware security feature as the main reason.
According to the foundation, the Pixel 11 series lacks support for ARM Memory Tagging Extension (MTE), a hardware-based security technology used by GrapheneOS to strengthen protection against certain memory-safety vulnerabilities. Developers were able to create only a partial port of GrapheneOS, but the project says it cannot complete an official production-ready version without the required hardware support.
The development could be significant for users who specifically choose Pixel phones for GrapheneOS and its enhanced privacy and security features. However, the absence of MTE does not mean Pixel 11 devices have no security protections. Google’s latest phones continue to include other security technologies, including the Titan M3 security chip and long-term software and security updates.
