Union Home Minister Amit Shah has unveiled a strategic “win-win” formula for the upcoming delimitation process, aimed at addressing the concerns of Southern states regarding political representation. In a landmark address to the Lok Sabha, he proposed a uniform 50% increase in parliamentary seats across all states simultaneously. This move is designed to ensure that states which successfully implemented population control measures are not penalized, but rather rewarded with increased representation while maintaining their relative weight in the federal structure.
Under this new proposal, the political map of South India is set for a significant upgrade. Andhra Pradesh’s current 25 seats will rise to 38, providing an additional 13 seats, while Telangana will see its tally grow from 17 to 26 seats. Similarly, Tamil Nadu’s representation will jump from 39 to 59, Karnataka’s from 28 to 42, and Kerala’s from 20 to 30 seats. This proportional increase ensures that the Southern voice in Delhi remains strong and balanced, even as the total strength of the Lok Sabha is expected to cross the 800-member mark.
Beyond regional balance, this expansion will serve as a massive catalyst for women’s empowerment in Indian politics. In accordance with the Women’s Reservation Bill, over 270 of the newly expanded seats will be reserved for women candidates. Minister Shah emphasized that this delimitation is not merely a numbers game but a safeguard for the political identity of all states. By decoupling the increase from purely raw population growth and applying a uniform percentage, the center aims to strengthen the parliamentary democracy while fostering national unity.
